New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - The March 2008 estimate for new motor vehicle sales (90 774) decreased 0.1% when compared with February 2008. The trend estimate had previously been increasing for over 14 consecutive months. When compared to March 2007, the trend estimate increased by 5.2%.
• Seasonally adjusted - The March 2008 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (90 315) increased by 1.0% compared with February 2008.

• Trend - When comparing March 2008 to February 2008, trend estimates decreased for passenger vehicles and increased for sports utility vehicles and other vehicles. Passenger vehicles decreased by 0.3% while sport utility vehicles and other vehicles increased by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively. When compared to the same period 12 months ago, sports utility vehicles and other vehicles rose 16.2% and 12.0% respectively while passenger vehicles fell by 0.3%.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing March 2008 to February 2008, passenger vehicles and other vehicles increased by 1.2% and 2.3% respectively while sports utility vehicles decreased by 0.9%.

• Trend - When comparing March 2008 to February 2008, five states and territories showed increases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest increases were in the Northern Territory (2.8%) and Victoria (0.5%) followed by South Australia (0.3%), Australian Capital Territory (0.2%) and Western Australia (0.1%). Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales decreased by 1.2%, 0.2% and 0.1% respectively.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing March 2008 to February 2008, all states and territories with the exception of Victoria showed increases in total sales. The largest increase was in the Northern Territory (11.8%), followed by the Australian Capital Territory (6.8%) and Western Australia (2.5%). The smallest increase was in South Australia (0.2%). Victoria showed a decrease of 0.2%.
